The term black panther is most frequently applied to black-coated leopards (Panthera pardus) of Africa, Asia and Central and South America;

The black colour in a Panther is from a melanistic colour variant in leopord species. Melanism in the leopord occurs due to a recessive gene. Close examination of the colour of these black cats will show that the typical markings are still present, but are hidden by the excessive black melanin pigment, giving an effect similar to that of printed silk.
